Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Pitch Notes.
- Accumulator
- A type of parlay where multiple selections are combined and winnings roll over each successive win.
- American Odds
- Odds displayed as a positive or negative number; positive shows profit on a $100 bet, negative shows amount needed to win $100.
- Asian Handicap
- A handicap bet that eliminates the draw outcome and adjusts the line to half or quarter goals to reduce ties.
- Bankroll Management
- The practice of setting aside money for betting and staking only a small portion on each wager.
- Bookmaker Margin
- The percentage of total bets that the bookmaker keeps as profit, built into the odds.
- Both Teams to Score
- A bet on whether each team will score at least one goal during the match.
- Cash Out
- A feature allowing you to settle a bet before the match ends, locking in a profit or loss.
- Correct Score
- A bet predicting the exact final score of a match.
- Decimal Odds
- Odds expressed as a single number that includes your stake; multiply your stake by this number to calculate total return.
- European Handicap
- A three-way handicap bet where you can back a team with a -1, -2, or +1 goal advantage.
- Expected Value
- The average amount you can expect to win or lose per bet if the same situation repeats.
- Fractional Odds
- Odds shown as a fraction, indicating how much profit you make relative to your stake.
- Goal Line
- The total number of goals set by the bookmaker for a match; you bet on over or under that line.
- Half-time/Full-time
- A bet that combines the result at half-time and the result at full-time in one wager.
- In-Play
- Betting on a match while it is already in progress, with odds that update as the game unfolds.
- Juice
- The commission a bookmaker takes included in the odds, also called 'vig'.
- Live Betting
- Same as In-Play; placing bets on events as they happen during a match.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team will win the match, with odds expressed as a positive or negative number.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether the total number of goals scored in a match will be higher or lower than a set line.
- Parlay
- A single bet that links two or more selections; all must win for the bet to pay out.
- Point Spread
- A handicap given to the favorite team to level the betting field, expressed as a number of goals.
- Responsible Gambling
- A set of principles and tools to help players stay in control and avoid harmful gambling behavior.
- Single Bet
- A straightforward bet on one outcome, with a win determined by that single selection.
- System Bet
- A bet that covers multiple combinations of selections, allowing a win even if some selections lose.
- Value Bet
- A bet where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome, offering positive expected value.
